What are Roaches?
Cockroaches are the most common insect pests infesting homes, food service establishments and other structures in the Northeast. They are large and omnivorous insects that are capable of transmitting disease, which causes food poisoning. Recently, cockroaches have been found to be the source of a highly common allergen in people, second only to house dust. There are many species of roaches but the German cockroach is by far the most common roach found in homes. Other types of roaches include the Oriental and American cockroaches that usually prefer dark, damp areas such as basements, floor drains, crawl spaces and utility closets. Cockroaches typically become established in homes after being introduced in grocery bags, with laundry, or, in some cases, wandering in from outdoors. Once cockroaches become established they are prolific breeders, capable of producing several thousand offspring in a year.
What Do I Look For?
Signs of cockroaches include:
- Visible identification of live or dead roaches, shell casings, and specks (fecal pellets and regurgitated food)
- Detection of pungent and oily odors
- Food products showing signs of pest activity
German cockroaches are much smaller and most commonly found in homes and food establishments. However, it is also common to see American or Oriental cockroaches, which are larger and may be known as “water bugs.” Because many people are allergic to cockroaches, this can be an indication of their presence in a home. Cockroaches are generally most active at night, or in an apartment when lights are off, so you may not be fully aware of a problem with roaches at first.

Since cockroaches flourish where food and moisture are readily available, sanitation is an important step in prevention and control. Empty soft drink bottles, cardboard boxes and paper bags should not be allowed to accumulate. Food containers should be sealed and any crumbs or spillage should be cleaned up.
